as posted by the channelThe Rexist Party, led by Léon Degrelle, was a Belgian ultranationalist political movement active from the 1930s through World War II. Founded in 1935, the party drew inspiration from Catholic social teachings and Italian fascism, emphasizing authoritarianism, nationalism, and anti-communism. Initially, it achieved moderate success in elections, particularly in Wallonia, by appealing to conservative Catholic voters. However, its popularity waned as Degrelle openly aligned with Germany.
During the German occupation of Belgium in WWII, the Rexist Party collaborated with the Germans, becoming a tool for promoting their ideals. Degrelle himself volunteered for the Waffen-SS, commanding the Walloon Legion on the Eastern Front. After the war, the Rexist Party was disbanded, and Degrelle fled to Spain to avoid prosecution for collaboration. His role as a collaborator rendered him one of Belgium’s most infamous wartime figures, a legacy of treachery and controversy.
