as posted by the channelThe June Uprising of 1941 in Lithuania was a short but significant rebellion against Soviet occupation, coinciding with the launch of Operation Barbarossa, Nazi Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union. On June 22, 1941, as German forces advanced into Lithuania, Lithuanian rebels, led by the underground Lithuanian Activist Front (LAF), rose up against the Soviet regime, hoping to restore their nation's independence.
The uprising was fueled by widespread resentment toward the Soviet occupation, which had begun in 1940 and included mass deportations, executions, and suppression of national institutions. When the Wehrmacht attacked the Soviet Union, Lithuanian insurgents seized the opportunity, clashing with retreating Red Army forces and Soviet collaborators. They managed to capture key cities, including the capital, Kaunas, where they proclaimed the restoration of Lithuanian independence and formed a provisional government.
Though the uprising was initially successful, the Lithuanian rebels’ hopes for independence were quickly dashed as Germany replaced Soviet control. The German occupation dismissed the provisional government, and Lithuania remained German rule. However, the uprising remains a symbol of Lithuanian resistance against foreign domination during World War II.
