0:49Now PlayingOskar Dirlewanger, the commander of the notorious Dirlewanger Brigade, was born in Würzburg (Germany) on 26 September 1895.
He was an alcoholic and drug addict, prone to violence. He had fought in the German right-wing militias after the First World War. He joined the Nazi party in 1923, but jeopardized his political future and he was expelled from the Party. He contacted an old WW1 comrade, Gottlob Berger, now a highranking SS official. Berger used his influence to sent him to Spain.
There Dirlewanger fought in the Condor Legion, a German unit which fought in the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). When he returned in 1939 he joined the Allgemeine SS (General SS) with the rank of SS-Untersturmführer. Mid-1940 Berger arranged Dirlewanger to command and train a military unit of convicted poachers. With this the Dirlewanger Brigade was born...
