13:47Now PlayingThe liberation of the Dutch East Indies in 1944–1945 was part of the wider Allied “island-hopping” campaign against Japan in the Pacific during the Second World War. After Japan conquered the colony in early 1942, the islands became strategically important because of their oil, rubber, and shipping routes. By 1944, Allied forces, led mainly by the United States and Australia under General Douglas MacArthur, began advancing westward through New Guinea toward Indonesian territory. The campaign focused on capturing key islands while bypassing heavily defended Japanese positions. Allied troops landed on places such as Morotai in September 1944, using the island as a major air and naval base for further operations. Other important battles took place in Borneo during 1945, especially around Tarakan, Balikpapan, and Brunei Bay. Australian forces played a major role in these operations, facing difficult jungle terrain, tropical disease, and determined Japanese resistance. As Allied air and naval power grew, Japanese supply lines collapsed. Many Japanese troops became isolated and unable to receive reinforcements or food. Following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet declaration of war against Japan, Japan surrendered on 15 August 1945.
