1:48Now PlayingTake a look at these horrific photos that were taken in Indonesia during 1948. Many would say these were Indonesians that were killed by the Dutch, or by Indonesians working for the Dutch, but nothing is further from the truth. While we remember the 1945-49 Dutch-Indonesian war as a war of colonization versus colonized, brutal internal infighting occurred in 1948 when the Madiun Affair took place. It happened in the Indonesian city of Madiun, during the country's struggle for independence from the Dutch. The uprising was led by elements of the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI) and allied left-wing groups, who were inspired by revolutionary ideas and opposed the policies of the Republican government. The revolt followed growing political tensions after the Renville Agreement, which forced Indonesia to make territorial concessions to the Dutch. Many leftists viewed the agreement as a betrayal of the independence movement. Returning communist leader Musso called for a more radical revolution, further increasing tensions. On 18 September 1948, rebel forces seized control of Madiun and declared a revolutionary government. President Sukarno quickly denounced the uprising, framing it as a communist attempt to overthrow the Republic. He ordered his troops to crush the rebellion. Within weeks, government forces retook Madiun. Musso was killed while attempting to escape, and thousands of suspected communist supporters were arrested or executed. In these series of photos we see alleged communists being tied together with ropes and led to a pit. To save bullets they were being butchered by bayonet, one by one. An absolute brutal death. If you know any more about these savage executions, do let me know in the comments.
