Thousands of residents took shelter and fishermen secured their boats on Wednesday as Typhoon Podul intensified while approaching southern Taiwan. The Central Weather Administration reported that Podul is packing sustained winds of 155 km/h (96 mph) and continues to strengthen. Forecaster Lin Ting-yi told AFP that the typhoon is expected to make landfall in lightly populated Taitung County around noon local time (0400 GMT) before sweeping across the island and moving into the Taiwan Strait. Authorities have issued storm alerts, urging residents to stay indoors as heavy rain and powerful winds batter the region.
