Speaking in the House Judiciary Committee Hearing, McGovern said Republicans engaged in “late-night shenanigans” and “were trying to pull one over on the entire membership of this House,” claiming there was a deal on FISA reform when “in reality, no deal existed.” He blasted what he called a misleading attempt to insert a fake safeguard, saying, “They claimed there was a new warrant requirement—there wasn’t,” warning the bill could even “expand warrantless surveillance, not eliminate it.”
McGovern sharply criticized the legislative process, calling it “an embarrassment… sloppy, deceptive, and shameful,” after Republicans rushed a massive bill to the floor with almost no time for review. He also mocked GOP priorities, saying they were “passing a resolution congratulating themselves… literally giving themselves a participation trophy,” while Americans struggle with rising costs.
In one of his strongest attacks, McGovern directly linked Republican actions to Donald Trump, stating they “tried to turn the House into a rubber stamp for Donald Trump,” accusing the GOP of shutting down debate and blocking amendments to push through Trump-backed policies without scrutiny.
He didn’t hold back on the economic impact either, slamming what he called the “big ugly bill” as a giveaway to powerful interests. According to McGovern, Republicans are “choosing corporate corruption over the public interest,” passing “more giveaways to corporate interests… making life harder for regular people.” He warned the legislation would “worsen the Trump affordability crisis” by locking in nearly $200 billion in cuts to SNAP benefits, potentially increasing hunger across the country.
McGovern concluded with a broader indictment of Trump-era politics, arguing that Republicans are “helping the polluters, helping the corporations, and helping themselves,” instead of addressing real issues like rising costs, healthcare, and economic relief for families.
