A prominent Emirati political scientist, Abdulkhaleq Abdulla, has openly called for the shutdown of American military bases in the UAE, arguing that the United States is no longer a strategic asset but increasingly a burden. His remarks, which quickly went viral, reflect a growing debate across the region about the long-term value of the US military presence.
Abdulla stated that the UAE has already demonstrated its ability to defend itself during recent Iranian attacks, saying the country “no longer needs America to defend it.” Instead, he suggested that the focus should shift toward acquiring advanced weaponry rather than hosting foreign troops. This marks a significant shift for a nation that has long positioned itself as one of Washington’s most reliable partners, especially after being designated a major US defense partner in 2024 with deep cooperation across defense, technology, and investment.
The Iran conflict has fundamentally altered perceptions. Since February 2026, Iran has launched hundreds of ballistic missiles, over 2,000 drones, and multiple cruise missiles at targets in the UAE. Many of these strikes specifically targeted US military installations, including Al Dhafra Air Base, effectively placing the UAE on the frontlines of a war it did not initiate. The war also had serious economic consequences, damaging energy infrastructure and disrupting oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz, which has weighed on revenues.
Meanwhile, UAE officials have emphasized that any future agreement with Iran must include security guarantees and compensation for damages, pointing toward a more independent and restructured regional security framework. According to the Wall Street Journal, the UAE’s central bank chief raised the idea of a currency-swap line with Treasury Department and Federal Reserve officials during meetings in Washington, D.C., last week.
