YouTube Description
as posted by the channelWorld News: Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares demanded the 'immediate release' of Spanish-Palestinian activist Saif Abukeshek after Israeli forces intercepted a Gaza-bound flotilla in international waters and extended his detention.
Speaking before parliament, Albares said Spain had summoned Israel’s chargé d'affaires for a second time to protest what he called an “inadmissible and unacceptable” decision to prolong the activist’s detention.
“It is an action contrary to international law, following a boarding in international waters, and he must be immediately released,” Albares declared. He also stressed that the Spanish government had been “mobilised at all levels” to ensure the safety and protection of its citizens.
Abukeshek was detained alongside Brazilian activist Thiago Avila after Israeli forces intercepted vessels from the Global Sumud Flotilla near Greece in late April. The activists were attempting to challenge Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinians.
While most activists onboard were reportedly transferred to Crete, Abukeshek and Avila were taken to Israel for questioning. An Israeli court has since extended their detention until Sunday. Israeli authorities claim the activists obstructed military operations and alleged links between the flotilla and Hamas — accusations strongly denied by the activists’ legal team.
The incident has intensified international scrutiny over Israel’s blockade of Gaza, maritime operations in international waters, and the treatment of foreign activists involved in humanitarian missions.
