12:11Now PlayingWorld News: Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, delivered a blistering statement at the U.N. stakeout, rejecting a U.S.–Bahrain–backed draft resolution on the Strait of Hormuz and accusing Washington of hypocrisy, aggression, and violating international law.
Calling the proposal deeply flawed, one-sided, and 'politically motivated'. Iravani said the resolution was not about protecting freedom of navigation but about legitimizing what he described as unlawful U.S. actions against Iran in the Persian Gulf.
“The real purpose is to legitimize the unlawful action of the United States against Iran,” Iravani declared, adding that the current crisis is “the direct result of the unlawful war imposed by the United States.” He also accused Washington of selectively invoking international law while ignoring its own alleged violations.
In one of the strongest moments of his remarks, the Iranian envoy said: “If there is any member state that lacks credibility in invoking international law, it is the United States.” He further accused the U.S. of targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure in Iran, calling such acts 'war crimes.'
Iravani insisted that Iran supports 'peace, security, and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz for all,' but stressed that stability can only return through “a permanent end to the war, the lifting of maritime blockade, and the restoration of normal passage.”
The ambassador also slammed the U.S. military presence in the Persian Gulf as destabilizing, questioned why Washington should influence regional security “thousands of miles away from its own territory,” and warned that adopting the resolution would “seriously damage the credibility and impartiality of the Security Council.”
Closing his remarks, Iravani urged member states to reject the draft resolution, arguing that the Security Council “must not be exploited by aggressors or instrumentalized to legitimize unlawful conduct.”
