38:33Now PlayingUS News: Democrat Pramila Jayapal delivered a blistering criticism of the Trump administration’s Cuba policy during a press briefing on Tuesday, accusing Washington of worsening a humanitarian crisis through sanctions, embargoes, and economic pressure.
Speaking after her recent visit to Cuba, Jayapal said U.S. policy has “destroyed the civilian population in Cuba” and warned that continued sanctions are “an economic bombing of the infrastructure of Cuba.” She argued the decades-long embargo has failed to achieve regime change while inflicting suffering on ordinary Cubans.
“The embargo has to be lifted to begin alleviating the humanitarian crisis on the island,” Jayapal said, calling the policy a “Cold War-era relic.” She also cited a declassified U.S. memo that described the goal of sanctions as creating “hunger, desperation, and overthrow of the government.”
Jayapal detailed conditions she witnessed in Cuba, including hospitals struggling with power blackouts, broken medical equipment that cannot be repaired due to sanctions, rising infant mortality, empty pharmacy shelves, fuel shortages, and widespread food insecurity. She described visiting a neonatal intensive care unit where only four incubators were functioning because others had been damaged by electrical outages.
Jayapal further argued that U.S. sanctions are damaging America’s own economic and diplomatic interests, while isolating Cuba from global trade, tourism, and medical cooperation.
