During the hearing, Vasquez pointed to the Pentagon’s massive budget request, saying, “You’re requesting $1.5 trillion for the Defense Department — the largest one-year increase since World War II,” while arguing that rising costs of living continue to strain military families. “The soaring cost of gas, groceries, housing, and child care have left military families underwater,” he said.
Highlighting conditions on the ground, Vasquez cited his visit to White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, where he observed deteriorating infrastructure. “What I saw was infrastructure in need of a complete rebuild… service members are still living in overcrowded barracks, sending their kids to run-down schools, and lacking access to child care,” he stated.
He directly challenged the administration’s priorities, criticizing what he called a focus on overseas conflict over domestic military welfare. “The department continues to prioritize a $25 billion war of choice in Iran over improving the lives of our troops,” Vasquez said.
In one of the most striking moments of the exchange, he declared: “Spending a billion dollars a day on a war overseas while leaving service members out to dry is not America First — it’s a betrayal.”
Vasquez also questioned the lack of visible progress despite previous funding approvals. “I’ve yet to see the results come home… service members have said nothing about progress,” he added, pressing Hegseth to provide detailed accountability on spending aimed at improving quality of life.
In response, Hegseth defended the administration’s approach, stating that “quality of life is incredibly important” and pointing to “historic investments” in housing, barracks, and family support programs. He added that a dedicated task force and billions in funding are being directed toward fixing long-standing infrastructure issues.
The exchange underscores growing tensions in Washington over defense spending, the Iran conflict, and whether enough is being done to support U.S. troops and their families at home.
