“Stuff should cost less. You are making lots of stuff cost lots more,” Whitehouse said during the heated exchange. He accused the EPA of steering money “from consumers’ pockets into the pockets of expensive natural gas units” and repeatedly claimed Trump’s policies benefit “fossil fuel polluters, Trump’s big donors.”
The Rhode Island senator also questioned whether the EPA is properly tracking the real economic impact of coal plants, pollution, and climate-related insurance crises. “Are you even tracking the consumer costs of those coal plants?” Whitehouse asked point-blank.
Lee Zeldin pushed back during the hearing, defending the administration’s policies and criticizing Whitehouse’s claims about energy costs and climate policy. The tense hearing highlighted growing political clashes over energy prices, environmental regulations, clean energy investments, and the future of U.S. climate policy under President Donald Trump.
