He recognized they weren’t the black bears that are common in northwest Florida. The cubs are Kodiak bears, a unique subspecies of the brown or grizzly bear, which are native to Alaska. Alaska Department of Fish and Game says Kodiak bears can stand at over 10 feet tall when on their hind legs and weigh more than 1,500 pounds.
