We’ve now learned that a US F-35 fighter jet had to make an emergency landing at a friendly air base in the Middle East after reportedly being struck by what is believed to be Iranian fire while flying a combat mission over Iran. The plane landed safely, thankfully, and the pilot is in stable condition, which suggests they were injured. That’s an 80 million plane, and stealthy, no less.
At the same time, Iran attacked a Qatari natural gas facility that produces 17% of Qatar’s natural gas exports, and the consequences were immediate. European natural gas prices reportedly spiked more than 30 percent overnight. Qatar says it could take years to restore the facility. Some energy experts think it could take closer to a decade. That means this isn’t just another headline. It means the world just got poorer. Natural gas just got scarcer. Energy prices are going up. Inflation pressure is going up. And families everywhere are going to pay for this war, whether they understand that yet or not.
