Iran War Update

Tonight I started with the biggest Iran story of the day: Trump blinked. After threatening to blow up Iran’s power plants unless Tehran reopened the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours, he backed down. And he backed down in the most Trump way possible, by pretending it was all part of some brilliant secret negotiation. Iran says that’s nonsense. So what we’re left with is a president who made a reckless threat, got called out, and then folded.

Then it got worse. The Washington Post reported that US officials no longer believe the war can achieve its original goals. No regime change. No permanent end to Iran’s nuclear program. The goal now is basically just getting the Strait reopened. In other words, after all the chaos, the deaths, the money, and the spike in energy prices, the administration has landed on a goal we could have achieved by not starting this in the first place. That’s not strategy. That’s failure.

I also dug into the domestic side of Trump’s politics, and it’s ugly. He’s now trying to put ICE agents into airports to do TSA work even though Democrats have repeatedly tried to fund TSA and Republicans blocked it. That’s bad enough. But if ICE is being used to check for undocumented travelers, then by definition Americans may end up having to prove citizenship just to fly. That’s a huge civil-liberties problem. And when Steve Bannon says this may be a test run for putting ICE around polling places, you’d be a fool not to take that seriously.

Then I pivoted to some personal news: after all these years, my Greek citizenship application was accepted. It still has to be published in the FEK and then I have to take the oath, but it’s finally happening. So the back half of the show turned into a broader conversation about Europe, dual citizenship, taxes, the Greek passport process, and even the difficulty of learning Greek. A weird mix, maybe. But that’s the show. War, democracy, citizenship, identity, and what all of it means in real life.
