Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the history of China continues with a video in which we discuss how China became so big. China’s modern borders encompass not only the Han Chinese heartland but also vast territories of Tibetans, Uyghurs, and Mongolians. How did these diverse regions become part of the Chinese state? This video explores the rise of the Qing Dynasty and its sweeping conquests across Inner Asia in the 17th and 18th centuries. We begin with the historic struggle between sedentary China and the nomadic peoples of the steppe, before following the Manchu-led Qing as they forged an empire three times larger than that of the Ming. From the wars against the Chahar and Dzungar Mongols, to the incorporation of Tibet under Qing rule, and the brutal conquest of Xinjiang with the genocide of the Dzungars, this episode reveals how China’s imperial expansion reshaped the map of Asia. We also examine how the Qing managed a vast multicultural empire, balancing diplomacy, local autonomy, and demographic change, while setting the stage for the ethnic tensions that remain in modern China.
