Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the history of India continues with a video on the history of the Sikhs. The story of the Sikhs is one of resilience, faith, and transformation. From their emergence in the fertile valleys of 15th-century Punjab, Sikhism grew from the teachings of Guru Nanak into a powerful movement that blended spirituality with social equality. Over two centuries, the ten Gurus shaped the community into a society bound by the Guru Granth Sahib, the langar, and the Five Ks, emphasizing unity, justice, and service. Yet persecution under the Mughals forced the Sikhs to evolve into a warrior people, culminating in the Khalsa founded by Guru Gobind Singh. From Banda Singh Bahadur’s short-lived republic to the formation of the Misls and the meteoric rise of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s Sikh Empire, the community stood at the forefront of Indian history. The fall of the Empire and the Anglo-Sikh Wars brought them under British rule, where Sikhs became both loyal soldiers of the Raj and champions of independence through the Singh Sabha, the Akali Movement, and the Ghadar Party. The 20th century tested the Sikhs through two World Wars, Partition, and insurgency, but they rebuilt, emerging as one of India’s most industrious communities and forming a vibrant diaspora across the globe. Today, Sikhism is not only a religion but a living heritage of courage, equality, and compassion. This documentary traces that epic journey — from the Gurus to the global Sikh community — exploring how the “Lions of the Punjab” forged their legacy.
