Sudan’s current tragedy is not an isolated disaster, but part of a much longer pattern of violence stretching back to independence. This video explores the First Sudanese Civil War, tracing its roots to the deep cultural, religious, ethnic, and economic divide between North and South Sudan under British-Egyptian rule. It examines how colonial neglect, political exclusion, and the failure to address Southern demands for autonomy created the conditions for rebellion. The story then follows the Torit Mutiny of 1955, the brutal reprisals that followed, and the transformation of scattered Southern resistance into a more organized insurgency. The video covers the rise of Anya-Nya, the harsh policies of Arabization and Islamization, massacres, forced relocations, and the widening gulf between Khartoum and the South. It also highlights the role of Joseph Lagu, the consolidation of the Southern movement, and foreign involvement, including support from Israel. Finally, the video explains how years of stalemate and exhaustion led both sides to the Addis Ababa Agreement of 1972, ending the first war, but not resolving the deeper issues that would later ignite another conflict.
