Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on the Ancient Civilizations continues with an episode on Alexander as we discuss how he managed to conquer Persia. Alexander the Great’s conquest of the Achaemenid Persian Empire was one of the most dramatic turning points in world history. But was it simply the result of Alexander’s genius, or were deeper forces at work? This video explores the many factors that allowed a young Macedonian king to defeat Darius III and overthrow the largest empire the world had yet seen. We begin with the legacy of Philip II of Macedon, whose military reforms, diplomacy, and control over Greece gave Alexander a powerful foundation. We then examine the instability of the late Achaemenid Empire, where revolts, succession struggles, and uneven control weakened Darius before the first major clash even began. The video also looks at the Macedonian army’s flexibility, the role of the sarissa, the Companion cavalry, and Alexander’s battlefield improvisation at Granicus, Issus, and Gaugamela. Beyond battle, logistics, naval support, local alliances, propaganda, and administration helped Alexander secure conquered lands and win over regional elites. Alexander’s victory was not inevitable—but it was built on preparation, opportunity, military skill, and political adaptation.
