Marking 500 days since the October 7 2023 attacks — in which armed militia Hamas killed at least 1,200 people and took more than 250 hostages — the president told Nick Ferrari his nation wanted to find a lasting peace.
“For decades, this recurs because of terror,” Mr Herzog said.
“Because of this jihadist notion that, ‘we prefer dying rather than living’, but [Israel] is a nation that prefers living rather than dying.
“And there is a trajectory of Israel's inclusion in the region, of moving to peace between Jews and Muslims.”
Presently, 73 out of Israel's 250 hostages are yet to be released.
Since the attacks, Israeli commenced a deadly invasion of the Gaza Strip, which has killed at least 45,000 Palestinians, and destroyed critical infrastructure such as housing, healthcare centres, and schools.
To date, 90 per cent of Gaza’s population, or 2.1 million people have been displaced, according to UN figures.
Israeli hostages has been slowly released since late January, following a ceasefire deal between Hamas and Israel, but it remains unclear if it will evolve into a lasting cessation of hostilities.
In recent weeks, US President Donald Trump said it has his vision to turn the Gaza strip into a "riviera", by forcibly relocating the remaining Palestinian population in Gaza to neighbouring countries.
