Indian Cops Stop Consensual Interfaith Wedding, Cite Anti-Conversion Law

Indian police recently stopped an interfaith wedding in Lucknow, citing the newly passed "Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance" after receiving complaints from Hindu stakeholders. The police intervened on the wedding day, despite the Hindu bride and Muslim bridegroom's parents' giving their consent. As final preparations were underway, police arrived and asked the couple first to seek clearance from the Lucknow District Magistrate. The couple was given a copy of the anti-conversion ordinance and told that they couldn't get married without the District Magistrate's permission. Sources have also said that the Muslim man wanted to become Hindu, and that the couple were getting married according to Hindu rituals.
