Indonesia Bans Islamic Defenders’ Front for Terr0rist Links

According to the country's chief security minister, Indonesia has banned the controversial and politically influential hardline group, the Islamic Defenders' Front (widely known by its Indonesian acronym FPI). Formed in 1998, the FPI has set itself up as a self-proclaimed "moral guardian" of Indonesia and is notorious for attacks on bars and the country's minority groups. It gained political prominence in 2016 when the group garnered enormous protests that eventually led to former Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama's conviction on charges of "blasphemy." On Wednesday, December 30th, the FPI was officially outlawed, effective immediately, with the security minister citing the alleged vigilantism and links to terrorism. The group no longer has any legal standing within the nation.
