8:03Now PlayingAfter an overnight vote, Argentina became the biggest country in Latin America to legalize elective abortions on Wednesday, December 30th. The measure passed through the Senate with a vote of 38 in favour, 29 in opposition. The shift in attitudes has been attributed to the declining support for religious influence in governance and women's rights activists' growing power. It has been estimated that a minimum of 350,000 secret abortions happened yearly in Argentina and women who have undergone such procedures no longer have to fear legal prosecution. In 2019, 62.9% of the Argentine population identified as Catholic, a 13.6 percentage point drop since 2008. Simultaneously, the portion of people identifying with no religion grew to nearly 20 percent of the population. Argentina’s large Catholic and Evangelical Christian population will likely fight to overturn this measure. Pro-choice activists celebrated the victory with large demonstrations across the nation and other neighbouring Latin countries.
