A federal judge in Washington, D.C., has established a trial date for the case brought by the Justice Department against former President Donald Trump concerning alleged actions aimed at obstructing the transfer of presidential power following the 2020 election. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, presiding over the federal district court in Washington, announced during a hearing on Monday that the proposed trial commencement in January 2024, suggested by federal prosecutors, does not provide sufficient time for Trump to adequately prepare.
While Trump's recommended schedule for the trial, set for April 2026, is considered overly extensive and poses the risk of fading memories and unavailable witnesses, Judge Chutkan emphasized the need for a more balanced timeframe. Consequently, the trial is slated to begin on March 4, 2024. This arrangement, as it stands, will commence a day before Super Tuesday—an important milestone in the presidential election calendar involving primaries across more than a dozen states. Trump, a Republican presidential contender in his third White House bid, will be participating in this significant electoral moment.
Judge Chutkan emphasized her commitment to treating Trump like any other defendant in the court, acknowledging the defense's request for equitable treatment.
