Former President Donald Trump's federal trial, involving charges of allegedly attempting to unlawfully retain power after losing the 2020 election to Joe Biden, is scheduled to commence on March 4th, as ruled by US District Judge Tanya Chutkan. This start date falls just before Super Tuesday, a significant day when Republican voters in numerous states and territories participate in selecting the party's potential 2024 presidential candidate.
The trial, set to take place in Washington, D.C., begins three weeks before Trump's scheduled trial in Manhattan for charges related to payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. Despite both sides in the federal trial estimating a possible duration of up to six weeks to present their cases, it remains uncertain if the Manhattan case will be rescheduled.
Prosecutors, led by special counsel Jack Smith's office, had requested a January 2nd start date, while Trump's defense team had suggested a commencement in April 2026. Trump's defense attorney, John Lauro, criticized the proposed trial date from the prosecution as seeking a "show trial" rather than a fair one.
