This minor yet notable gaffe occurred as Harris introduced Biden, leading many to speculate whether she might replace him as the Democratic candidate if he were to step down.
In her speech, Harris enthusiastically stated, “We give thanks to our commander-in-chief, the vice - the president of the United States! The extraordinary President of the United States Joe Biden!” Biden received applause from the Washington crowd and wished everyone a happy Independence Day, despite increasing calls from some Democrats for him to step down.
The incident mirrored a previous mistake by Biden during an interview with WURD, a black radio station in Philadelphia. During the interview, the 81-year-old president stumbled over his words, confusing his role with that of Harris and referring to himself as a black woman. He said, “By the way, I'm proud to be, as I said, the first vice president, first black woman... to serve with a black president. Proud to be involved of the first black woman on the Supreme Court. There's so much that we can do because, look... we're the United States of America.”
Biden appeared to be highlighting his role in appointing Kamala Harris as the first black female vice president and Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first black female Supreme Court justice. However, his mixed-up statements have added to the ongoing concerns about his fitness for office.
Despite the verbal mishaps, the July 4th event showcased a united front between Biden and Harris. The two shared warm moments, with Harris raising Biden's hand in the air and later embracing him. The evening concluded with fireworks, with Biden standing on the balcony alongside his family, Harris, and her husband, Doug Emhoff, in a clear display of solidarity.
