🔴 Biden Announces Withdrawal from 2024 Presidential Race
On Sunday, President Joe Biden declared he will not seek reelection in 2024, ending weeks of growing pressure and fallout from a disastrous debate performance that ignited dissent within the Democratic Party.
In a statement posted on X, Biden, 81, acknowledged that he is no longer the Democratic Party's strongest candidate to defeat former President Donald Trump. "While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on my duties as president for the remainder of my term," he wrote.
Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. "My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this," Biden stated on X.
With Biden's endorsement, Harris is now the leading contender for the Democratic nomination, leveraging Biden’s campaign resources. However, the Democratic National Convention in August could become contentious if the party does not coalesce around her during the upcoming virtual roll call of delegates, as other ambitious members may vie for the nomination.
