The Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago returned Tuesday following see ya later to Joe Biden. Biden delivered his weird goodbye to the nation shortly before 11:30 p.m. ET, long after most of the television audience had turned off their sets. History recorded Biden as the ousted president who didn’t want to leave, while his own party didn’t want him to stay.

The theme for Tuesday’s event was “A bold vision for America’s future” as the 2024 presidential campaign counted down to 76 days remaining. Former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle were scheduled to speak, while outside the venue, protests against the party’s Middle East policies continued. Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff was also on the list of speakers.

The Obamas returned to the city they once called home in support of Kamala Harris’ nomination, signaling a Democratic future without the aging Biden, whose age, leadership capacity, and legal troubles had raised doubts among voters. Biden, who served eight years as Obama’s vice president, left Chicago immediately after conceding to Harris, missing his former running mate’s speech.

Reports indicated that Michelle Obama planned to highlight how Harris’ experiences and values made her qualified to serve as president. Meanwhile, Barack Obama focused on what Democrats needed to do to defeat Trump in the general election.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, once considered a potential running mate for Harris, was also scheduled to speak. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, continued their campaign across battleground states as media attention focused on Chicago. Simultaneously, Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, held an event about 90 miles from the DNC site in Chicago, speaking from Fiserv Forum, the same arena where Republicans held their convention the previous month.
