Kamala Harris made headlines after joking in a radio interview that, naturally, she had smoked marijuana in her younger years, quipping, “Half my family’s from Jamaica. Are you kidding me?” However, the remark did not sit well with at least one Jamaican—her father, Donald J. Harris.

Donald Harris, an emeritus professor of economics at Stanford University, responded with an unsolicited statement to Jamaica Global Online, a Kingston-based website where he had recently written an essay on his family’s history. In his statement, he expressed deep dismay over his daughter’s comment.

“My dear departed grandmothers (whose extraordinary legacy I described in a recent essay on this website), as well as my deceased parents, must be turning in their graves right now to see their family’s name, reputation, and proud Jamaican identity being connected, in any way, jokingly or not, with the fraudulent stereotype of a pot-smoking joy seeker and in the pursuit of identity politics,” he wrote. He further stated, “Speaking for myself and my immediate Jamaican family, we wish to categorically dissociate ourselves from this travesty.”

Kamala Harris’ campaign chose not to comment on the matter.

Kamala Harris’ parents had separated when she was young and divorced a few years later. Although Donald Harris remained involved in his children’s lives, Kamala and her sister were primarily raised by their mother.

During the interview on “The Breakfast Club” podcast, Kamala Harris referenced her Jamaican heritage when asked about her stance on marijuana legalization. “Are you kidding me?” she responded, acknowledging that she had smoked a joint in college and, in a light-hearted nod to former President Bill Clinton’s infamous remark in 1992, added, “And I inhaled.”

Donald Harris, who did not respond to media inquiries, had previously collaborated with the Jamaican website’s administrator during his consulting work on the Jamaican economy in the 1990s. In an email reviewed by POLITICO, he indicated his intention to avoid further public discussion of the issue, stating, “I have decided to stay out of all the political hullabaloo by not engaging in any interviews with the media.”
