The upcoming debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump represents a pivotal moment in the 2024 election race, starkly contrasting with the dynamics of the previous debate that derailed President Biden’s campaign. With Biden bowing out after a poor performance, Harris has since managed to close the gap in the polls, turning the race into a tight contest just weeks before the election.

This critical debate, scheduled for Tuesday at Philadelphia's National Constitution Center, will be held without a live audience or live microphones, despite Harris' team advocating for the latter. Harris' campaign expressed concerns that the absence of live mics would protect Trump from direct exchanges with the vice president, potentially shielding him from more pointed moments of debate. In a letter to ABC, Harris' team stated, "Vice President Harris, a former prosecutor, will be fundamentally disadvantaged by this format, which will serve to shield Donald Trump from direct exchanges with the Vice President."

Jason Miller, senior adviser to Trump’s campaign, dismissed these concerns, asserting that the Trump campaign accepted the debate under the same terms originally planned when President Biden was still in the race.

Moderated by ABC anchors David Muir and Linsey Davis, the 90-minute debate will air on ABC News and stream across Disney+ and Hulu platforms. Notably, Trump won the coin flip for podium placement and the closing statement, opting to deliver the final remarks, with Harris selecting her position on the right side of the stage.

Strict rules will shape the debate: no early access to topics or questions for either candidate, no opening statements, and closing statements limited to two minutes. Candidates will respond to questions with two-minute limits, followed by rebuttals and a minute for any additional follow-up.

As Harris and Trump prepare for this face-off, the stakes are high, especially with Harris now filling the top spot on the Democratic ticket. This moment could solidify or shift voter sentiment as the election nears.
