2:16Now PlayingThe Quadriga, the golden statues standing before the State Capitol dome, is the most prominent feature of the building's exterior. The figures, known as "The Progress of the State," is an original decoration chosen by Cass Gilbert, the architect of the building.
The charioteer, the man holding the staff, is called "Prosperity," representing all Minnesota has to offer, according to Brian Pease of the Minnesota Historical Society. "In one arm he has the horn of plenty with the produce and the agricultural products displayed. In the other arm he has staff that says Minnesota, so it's proclaiming Minnesota's arrival as a very prosperous and progressive state," explained Pease.
According to Pease, the charioteer is being removed because the deck supporting the figure has deteriorated. Once it is removed, the charioteer will be cleaned and new layers of gold leaf will be added.Description
