13:19Now PlayingStudies indicate that obesity and a sedentary lifestyle are factors in lowering a students' academic success. Senator Susan Kent, DFL-Woodbury, offered S. F. 343, which would require every student to meet certain physical activity requirements. The goal, said Kent, is "higher test scores, fewer disciplinary issues, and healthier kids."
Committee members questioned whether it is fair to put this mandate on schools already struggling. Sam Walseth from the Minnesota Rural Education Association said it's difficult for many schools to find time during the academic day to fulfill current requirements and said "there are a lot of barriers" to overcome before he would endorse this legislation. He advocated for the legislature to allow districts to increase the academic day. He said this would provide the opportunities to incorporate more physical activity into students' time at school.
Senator Kent said she would continue to work with stakeholders, such as the Minnesota Department of Education, and teachers. The committee did not take action on the measure.
