31:52Now PlayingCalling Alzheimer's disease and dementia a "tsunami," Senator Carla Nelson, R-Rochester, presented legislation to the Senate Health, Human Services and Housing Committee Wednesday, February 4, designed to advance research. "The Alzheimer's Research and Support Act" would appropriate $5 million dollars annually over the next two years for dementia research. It includes an additional $750,000 in grants to connect caregivers and patients with needed resources.
Testimony in the committee centered on the growing issue dementia and Alzheimer's present as the population ages. Doctor Clifford Jack of the Mayo Clinic stated, "Currently, there are 100,000 individuals in Minnesota diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. At a national level, at present, over five million are diagnosed with dementia, but with the aging demographics of our society, projected United States numbers by 2050 are estimated to range between 11 million and 16 million people."
Sen. Nelson's Alzheimer's Research and Support Act passed on a unanimous voice-vote and was referred to the Senate State and Local Government Committee.
