Governor Mark Dayton fielded questions from the media on Wednesday, July 29, to discuss the issue.
The news conference took place prior to a meeting between the Governor and the Mille Lacs Area Tourism Council, but Dayton said history has proven how disastrous an early closure to the fishing season can be. "When this happened in Leech Lake every tourism related business collapsed," said Dayton.
The potential financial impact remains a question, but the governor and legislative leaders have agreed swift action in the form of a special legislative session will be needed in order to provide zero-interest loans and other financial remedies to help businesses survive in the event the fishing season ends early on the lake.
