4:56Now PlayingThe Legislative Working Group on Mille Lacs Lake reconvened Thursday, August 13, and ended the meeting without reaching a consensus on steps necessary to assist area businesses. Governor Mark Dayton has said he is prepared to call a special session to enact proposals, including offering zero-interest loans,reducing property taxes and promoting the area. He requested the working group to finalize a plan designed to help the resorts and businesses adversely impacted by the early closing of the Walleye fishing season.
Senator David Tomassoni, DFL-Chisholm, co-chair of the working group, questioned the precedence that calling a special session would set. He said, “we all agree we’d love to give [the resort and business owners] some kind of relief. The issue becomes if you call a special session for this, do you call a special session for the fifteen hundred workers that are laid off in the Iron Range? Do you call a special session for the storefronts in Ely that are closing because of a lack of tourism? Do you call a special session for the Cold Spring Brewery? Do you call a special session for any one of these little things that happen around the state?”
The meeting ended when Representative Tom Hackbarth, R-Cedar, co-chair of the working group, adjourned abruptly and said they will not meet again until a specific plan is presented by the Governor for the group to consider.
