18:25Now PlayingSenator Matt Schmit’s effort to expand broadband options in rural Minnesota gained traction Tuesday, April 19, when the Senate Finance Committee gave its preliminary approval to spending $85 million dollars for the effort. The measure will be incorporated as a separate article in the Senate’s omnibus supplemental appropriations bill.
According to Schmit, about 20 percent of rural residents lack access to quality broadband. “The fundamental challenge boils down to the lack of private investment capital in a short return on investment timeframe for providers and cooperatives doing good work, but of limited means in serving hard-to-reach areas,” Schmit said. The $85 million dollar appropriation builds on a current $30 million effort for the delivery of broadband to rural areas, he explained.
