10:21Now PlayingThe Minnesota Senate Republican Caucus named Sen. Paul Gazelka of Nisswa as Majority Leader-designate. Senate Republicans gathered at the State Office Building in St. Paul Thursday, November 10, to choose a leader following Tuesday's general election. When the 90th Legislature convenes on January 3, Senate Republicans will have a 34-33 majority, according to unofficial results from the Minnesota Secretary of State's Office.
Gazelka was elected on Tuesday to serve a third term in the Senate. He represents District 9, which includes Cass, Todd, Morrison and Wadena counties.
Senate Republicans also named Sen. Michelle Fischbach as Senate President-designate. Fischbach, of Paynesville, served as Senate President in 2011 and 2012. She was elected on Tuesday to an eighth Senate term. She represents District 13, which includes Benton and Stearns counties.
Senator Tom Bakk, DFL-Cook, will remain as leader of the Senate Democratic Caucus by serving as Senate Minority Leader.
