2:08:28Now PlayingA bill providing $35 million dollars in tax credits to individuals or corporations who donate money to cover costs of private school tuition narrowly earned the approval of the Senate Education Policy Committee Wednesday, January 24, on a 5-4 vote. Sponsor of the measure, Senator Roger Chamberlain, R-Lino Lakes, said the bill is designed to afford students educational opportunities.
"It is time to do something for these kids. To leave them in these schools in Minneapolis and St. Paul that are failing, or anywhere else from Warroad to Faribault, is criminal," Chamberlain said.
An opponent to the measure, Senator Susan Kent, DFL-Woodbury, said, "It is absolutely fair to say that ultimately the effect of this will be a draining of resources from our public school systems, and I just firmly believe that that is the wrong way to go."
