1:26:15Now PlayingThe Office of the Legislative Auditor released its report to members of the Senate E-12 Education Policy Committee on Thursday, January 19, that scrutinizes the operation of the Perpich Center for Arts Education. The state agency was created by the Legislature in 1985 to operate a residential arts high school and support arts education for K-12 students in Minnesota .
The audit report faulted the agency' governing board for failing to set strategic goals and for overseeing the operation of the Perpich Center, which has resulted in low morale among the employees. The report also cited low enrollment and weak test scores for its Woodbury arts school, threatening its viability.
The audit report acknowledged that the Perpich Center's outreach program has demonstrated positive results, but only reaches a small portion of the state's teachers in school districts. Furthermore, the Center is failing to comply with statutory requirements for providing arts education.
