1:36:37Now PlayingA bill that would allow Xcel Energy to build and operate a natural gas power plant in Sherburne County won the approval of the Senate Energy and Utilities Finance and Policy Committee on a 7-2 vote Thursday, February 3. Sponsored by Senator Andrew Mathews, R - Milaca, the bill was referred to the Senate floor for review and debate.
According to Mathews, Xcel Energy announced plans to close two of their Sherco coal plants and combine them into a natural gas power plant along with adding solar and wind-generated power. The Public Utilities Commission agreed with the closing of the coal plants, but withheld a decision on the new natural gas plant. "This has caused a great uncertainty for my district, not only for jobs, but also for the energy...," he said. The intent of the bill, he explained, is to bring clarity to the process.
Senate John Marty, DFL-Roseville, in opposing the bill, said, "I just do not think that we, as 201 legislators, are the best ones to make the determination..."
