6:07Now PlayingA bill that would add court review to the rules issued by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency in regards to water quality protection gained the approval of the Senate Environment and Natural Resources Policy Committee Monday, February 14.
Sponsor of the measure, Senator Scott Newman, R-Hutchinson, said the purpose of the bill is to provide outside peer review of MPCA's final decision on water quality rules and regulations. He explained that it is a step in trying to alleviate constituents' concerns over unresponsive administration among state agencies.
Kathryn Hoffman of the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy told committee members that the bill would add a second layer of expert review, administered by the courts, and would add months of delay into water quality protection decisions.
