50:28Now PlayingThe Senate approved a bill Thursday, February 16, that would allow Xcel Energy to build and operate a natural gas power plant in Sherburne County. The measure, sponsored by Senator Andrew Mathews, R-Milaca, helps execute a plan by Xcel Energy to retire two of the three coal-burning power generation units with the natural gas plant.
Mathews explained that the Public Utilities Commission has approved the plan to shut down the two coal burning plants, and they approved the plan to add add wind and solar generation; however, they delayed a decision on authorizing the natural gas power plant.
Senator John Marty cautioned the Senate on allowing Xcel Energy to determine the size of the plant and the amount of power it would generate. He authored an amendment, which was defeated, to leave that decision with the Public Utilities Commission.
In other action, the Senate approved a bill that would issue $35 million dollars in bonds to help finance the Rural Finance Authority, which assists new farms in their startup efforts.
