40:33Now PlayingAs part of the first Opioid Awareness Day on the Hill, a bipartisan group of lawmakers, officials, medical professionals, law enforcement, and members of the Steve Rummler Hope Foundation held a press conference Tuesday, February 21, to present the Opioid Reform Act, a series of bills to address the growing epidemic of opioid abuse in Minnesota.
According to Lt. Governor Tina Smith, opioid overdoses have increased by 430 percent in Minnesota, and Attorney General Lori Swanson said that more people now die from drug overdoses than car accidents. Referring to the opioid epidemic, Dr. Chris Johnson said, “You should know this was not an accident. This epidemic was engineered, not because necessarily everyone involved was conniving to create death, but they were pursuing incentives and we had insufficient safeguards to stop bad medicine and bad science from continuing.”
Two lawmakers, Rep. Dave Baker, R-Willmar, and Sen. Chris Eaton, DFL-Brooklyn Center, have each lost a child due to opioid addiction.
