43:50Now PlayingThe Senate Finance Committee debated a bill Wednesday, April 26, that would require clinics providing ten or more abortions per month to gain a special license. Within the state of Minnesota, six clinics fall under this classification. The bill would require inspections of the clinics at least every two years and an additional licensing fee of $365 dollars.
The bill’s author, Senator Michelle Fischbach, R-Paynesville, said, “It is the state’s obligation to regulate certain kinds of medical procedures or medical clinics so that we are able to ensure that things are done properly and safely.”
In opposition to the bill, Senator Chris Eaton, DFL-Brooklyn Center, said, “A bill has to further a valid state interest, confer benefits that outweigh burdens, and based on credible evidence, we have no evidence of problems in the abortion clinics...I cannot see the valid state interest.”
The bill passed the committee and will next be debated by the Senate.
