1:31:53Now PlayingProtestors who block highway traffic, lightrail or access to airports could face a stiffer penalty, under a bill approved by the Senate Monday, May 14, on a 40 to 27 vote. Sponsored by Senator Bill Ingebrigtsen, R-Alexandria, the bill would allow protestors to be charged with a gross misdemeanor, which carries jail time of up to one year or a fine of $3,000 or both.
"Not only do we want to prevent a tragedy on the roadways where someone is injured or even killed, access to law enforcement and emergency vehicle services and hospitals is extremely important, and for the good of all Minnesotans," said Ingebrigtsen.
"Members, what are we doing here today?" Senator Jeff Hayden, DFL-Minneapolis, asked his colleagues when rising to speak against the bill. "Do you think that reasonable and rational people would take to a freeway...would take to disrupting our air traffic just because they had nothing else to do? ...They are protesting because they watched on social media a man get killed in front of their eyes, and they believed it was wrong, and they believed the government did nothing to help them," he said.
