Demonstrating Security Measures to Make Schools Safer

Jason Horner, President of Safe Schools Safe Kids and key Republicans lawmakers held a press conference Friday, May 18, to illustrate the kinds of measures that can be taken by schools to increase school safety. As final negotiations are underway for the 2018 legislative session, some money will likely be directed towards establishing a safe schools revenue stream for safety upgrades in schools.

Chair of the Senate Education Finance Committee, Senator Carla Nelson, R-Rochester, said, “This legislature has been laser-focused on school safety. We know that school safety is paramount.”

The products patented by Minneapolis-based Safe Schools Safe Kids are designed to offer protection without compromising décor. The company’s president, Jason Horner, remarked, “A lot of the things you’ve seen on the market make schools look like prisons.” He went on to describe how his company’s products are easy to install and attractive.

“I’ve spent 12 years on a local school board and I know how hard our local districts are working to make our schools safe,” said Education Policy Chair Eric Pratt, R-Prior Lake. “And I think that’s why it’s so important and so exciting to see products like this, the innovation, that’s coming out of our Minnesota companies.”
