21:50Now PlayingWith Opioid Awareness Day at that State Capitol as the launching pad, Senator Julie Rosen, R-Vernon Center, Senator Chris Eaton, DFL-Brooklyn Park, Representative Liz Olson, DFL-Duluth, and Representative Dave Baker, R- Willmar held a news conference Wednesday, January 30, to describe their proposal establishing a stewardship program to fight the growing addiction to opioids.
"This issue has not waned at all," said Rosen. "In fact, it is getting worse in this state, and people are asking the state, the legislature, to do something about this issue."
Under their proposals, about $20 million dollars would be raised annually by increasing the licensing fee paid by opioid manufacturers and distributors. The funds would support several efforts, including aiding county social service programs that aid children neglected due to parental addiction. Money also would be used to develop evidence-based treatment programs and public awareness programs. Furthermore, statewide access to treatment and recovery services would be strengthened.
