In January, Governor Tim Walz appointed the first woman to lead the agency, and Commissioner Sarah Strommen joins Capitol Report moderator Shannon Loehrke to talk about the accomplishments and challenges facing the DNR.
The use of recreational marijuana is illegal in Minnesota, but growing hemp is allowed. Hemp is used for clothing, textiles, construction materials, plastic alternatives and health supplements. Senator Karla Bigham, DFL-Cottage Grove, joins Shannon to talk about the emerging industry.
Also this week, the sudden resignation of former state Senator Tony Lourey as Commissioner of the Department of Human Services prompted comments from Governor Walz and a press conference by GOP lawmakers expressing concern over the direction of DHS. Governor Walz also hosted a ceremonial bill signing for a new law that strengthens protections for workers and makes wage theft a felony.
