34:13Now PlayingSecretary of State Steve Simon, joined by a bipartisan group of lawmakers, offered support for legislation that would protect voters’ privacy in the upcoming Presidential Nomination Primary. They addressed the media at a press conference Wednesday, February 5.
After the 2016 chaotic precinct caucuses, the Minnesota legislature opted to move the state to a presidential nominating primary. The change allowed the major political parties to obtain a record of voters’ party preference, without any restrictions on how that information may be used. Lawmakers agreed that voter turnout may be suppressed without clearer guidelines to protect voter privacy.
Senator Ann Rest, DFL-New Hope, will introduce the bill in the 2020 legislative session to address voter privacy concerns.
